Current Situation In Mali
The situation in Mali is complex and rapidly evolving. While the Russian government (and the Malian junta) portrays the Russian presence as a stabilizing force that prevented a coup, independent reports and international observers paint a far more unstable picture.
The security situation in Mali is extremely tense and dangerous, with ongoing fighting between the army, rebels, and terrorist groups.
Rebel alliances (including Tuareg separatists and al-Qaeda-affiliated groups) recently captured key cities in the north, including the strategically important city of Kidal.
In late April 2026, Mali's Defense Minister Sadio Camara—one of the main architects of the Russian-Malian alliance—was killed in a suicide bombing near Bamako.
At the height of the recent unrest, Malian President Assimi Goita was not seen in public for several days, leading to widespread rumors about the regime's security.
In April 2026, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that its Afrika Korps (the successor to the Wagner Group) had successfully thwarted a coup attempt against the military junta under Colonel Assimi Goita. According to Moscow, Russian forces inflicted "irreplaceable losses" on the insurgents.
Intense fighting is raging in the north (e.g., Kidal with Tuareg rebels and JNIM terrorists) as well as in Bamako and other regions where barracks have been attacked. Curfews are in effect in Bamako (9 p.m. to 6 a.m., possibly extended) and nationwide; Bamako Airport was temporarily closed.
There is a high risk of terrorist attacks, kidnappings, and armed robberies everywhere, especially on roads.
Safe land travel is not possible; the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) confirms regular terrorist attacks.
The African Corps of the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on May 10 that Russian and Malian troops escorted a convoy of 700 fuel tankers to Bamako, preventing terrorist attacks on the convoy.
Earlier in May, the African Corps and Malian Armed Forces conducted a series of operations to clear logistical routes in Mali.
Overall, the African Corps of the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Malian Armed Forces continue operations against terrorist groups.
On May 9, the Malian Armed Forces carried out two airstrikes against militants in the Gao region:
“The first strike targeted a convoy of armed terrorist groups moving toward the village of Tarkint, located 40 km east of the city. The second strike, carried out 84 km east of the city of Burem, completely destroyed a large hideout of armed terrorist groups.”
Intense fighting is taking place in the north (e.g., Kidal with Tuareg rebels and JNIM terrorists) as well as in Bamako and other regions where barracks have been attacked. Military junta fighting against Al-Qaeda-affiliated groups and criminals; situation unclear.
