Former police officer Hiram Kimathi was arrested
Former police officer Hiram Kimathi was arrested on August 1, 2025, at his home in the Kambakia area of Makutano, Meru County, Kenya, by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The arrest, which took place around 1 PM following an intelligence-led operation, is linked to his alleged involvement with the "Fighting Brutality and Impunity" (FBI) movement, an anti-police brutality group. Kimathi, along with Jackson Kuria Kimani (alias Cop Shakur) and former Kenya Defence Forces officer Patrick Osoi, are suspected to be key figures in the group. The DCI has not disclosed specific charges, and Kimathi's lawyer, Dan Kiruai, reported that his whereabouts were initially unclear after being taken to an undisclosed location, raising concerns about the arrest's transparency. Conflicting reports from Osoi's team claim Kimathi surrendered voluntarily, though the DCI maintains it was an arrest. Kimathi had previously gained attention for defying a transfer to Todonyang Police Station and criticizing the government's "shoot-to-kill" orders, which he claimed led to punitive actions like salary withholding and being marked as a deserter.
