Ethiopia-South Sudan border region receives US$9.3 million for solar water project Climate-Resilient Water for Food Project: The Climate-Resilient Water for Food (W4F) project is a multinational initiative with a budget of US$9.3 million, approved by the African Development Fund (AfDF) in July 2026. Its goal is to strengthen climate resilience and food security in Ethiopia and South Sudan. The project supports vulnerable communities in the Gambella region of Ethiopia and the Unity State of South Sudan – areas affected by severe flooding, drought, and displacement. It aims to ensure a reliable water supply and increase the agricultural productivity of over 100,000 farmers. The project comprises two core components: - Construction/renovation of seven solar-powered water systems to provide clean drinking water for approximately 80,000 people, along with the implementation of flood control measures and new sanitation facilities. - Training of over 100,000 farmers in drought-resistant crops and agroforestry; provision of improved seeds, advisory services, and demonstration farms. The project focuses on women and youth: Women lead local water management committees and constitute the majority of participating farmers. Around 19,300 young people receive training in agricultural skills and entrepreneurship.
