Madagascar's new interim president, Colonel Michael Randrianirina
The former president of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, fled the country in October 2025 after weeks of protests against his government escalated. The protests began over water and electricity shortages and quickly expanded into a movement against corruption, poor governance, and inadequate basic services.
Parts of the military turned against Rajoelina, and an elite unit, CAPSAT, assumed control of the country.
Rajoelina fled abroad on October 12 aboard a French military aircraft, fearing for his life. He then dissolved the National Assembly by decree, which voted to remove him from office that same day. Despite his removal, Rajoelina initially refused to resign. On October 24, 2025, he was stripped of his Malagasy citizenship.
The situation was marked by massive protests, impeachment proceedings, and a military takeover, with the population primarily demanding Rajoelina's resignation and criticizing him as a puppet due to his dual citizenship and French support. At least 22 people have died in the protests. The international community, including French President Macron, appealed for respect for the constitutional order and called for solutions through dialogue. Madagascar is thus in the midst of a severe political and social crisis.
Madagascar's new interim president, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, has appointed Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo as prime minister. This follows a military coup that ousted former President Andry Rajoelina.
Colonel Randrianirina, a former high-ranking officer, announced his assumption of power on Tuesday after Rajoelina was accused of neglecting his duties during the nationwide protests. Randrianirina promised to restore political stability and hold new elections soon.
This move came after public anger over persistent power outages and poor living conditions sparked nationwide protests last month, which evolved into a movement against Rajoelina's government.
