The election in Benin is over
The election in Benin is over. Romuald Wadagni appears to have won. He has been elected the new president of Benin, according to preliminary results.
As finance minister, he oversaw the consolidation of public finances, reforms to improve the business climate, and efforts to strengthen Benin's credibility with international donors and markets. He also played a key role in the West African financial negotiations, including reforms related to the CFA franc system.
According to preliminary results released late Monday evening by the Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA), Wadagni received 94.05% of the vote.
He was elected for a seven-year term.
His rival, Paul Hounkpè, former culture minister, received 5.95% of the vote.
He conceded defeat and congratulated his only opponent even before the official announcement of the results.
The result announced by CENA is preliminary and, according to the constitution, must still be confirmed by the Constitutional Court.
