Election Campaign In Kenya, Update 5.4.2025

Anne Mumbi Waiguru, born April 16, 1971, is a prominent Kenyan politician, economist, and civil servant. She has served as the Governor of Kirinyaga County since 2017 and was re-elected in 2022. Waiguru made history as one of Kenya's first female governors following the adoption of the 2010 Constitution, alongside Charity Ngilu and Joyce Laboso. Before her political career, Waiguru held significant positions in public policy and governance. She worked at Transparency International, the Ministry of Finance, and as a technical advisor on public sector reforms during President Mwai Kibaki's administration. She was instrumental in implementing Kenya's Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS) and, as Cabinet Secretary for Decentralization and Planning under President Uhuru Kenyatta, led the establishment of the Huduma Centers. Waiguru faced controversies during her tenure as head of the Devolution CS, including allegations of corruption, which led to her resignation in 2015. Ruto's electoral base may, and will, shrink in favor of former Vice President Rigathi Gachagua. She also emphasized that Ruto still enjoys strong popular support. "The large turnout of the people in this presidential visit clearly demonstrates that he still enjoys popular support, contrary to claims that the president has lost support or that the people have defected to the opposition," Waiguru said. The following must be said. Anne Mumbi Waiguru is a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). She officially joined the party to pursue her political goals and defend her position as governor of Kirinyaga County. And UDA is Ruto's party. Her views echoed remarks made Wednesday by Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwah, who rebuked politicians who had expressed doubts about the feasibility of President William Ruto's visit to Mount Kenya following his falling out with the former DP. Waiguru called for agreement on Ruto's development agenda, saying the region would benefit more from this government than from an opposition government. This is a claim that is difficult to prove. "We will continue to support the president because we know that policy in 2027 will be decided solely on merit. Let us continue to support and work with President Ruto in the interest of development," she declared. And, yes, they exist. Mary Wamaua, Member of Parliament for the Maragua Constituency, once again changed the political landscape in Central Kenya after she publicly endorsed the president and claimed she made a mistake by supporting Gachagua. Wamaua is a Kenyan politician. She was first elected in 2017 on the Jubilee Party ticket and re-elected in 2022 under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). She also said that the president is her good friend and that, barring a few mistakes, a slip-up is not a fall. It might not be quite so clear-cut after all, as Wamaua was one of the most vocal defenders of former Vice President Rigathi Gachagua. She criticized the lawmakers for this move, calling it "regrettable." "If the vice president is impeached for advocating for the unity of the mountain, history will one day speak for itself. We know they are afraid when the mountain is united," she said in October 2024. Weeks later, Wamaua appears to have changed her mind. "So, Mr. President, I am your servant, and I hope you will use my services to advance Maragua and Murang'a County," Wamaua said.
