Election Campaign In Kenya, Update 7.4..2025
There were already some conflicts leading up to this election trip.
Vice President Kithure Kindiki and his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, faced a major political test.
Ruto's visit to this region is important. It is seen as a strategy to strengthen support ahead of the 2027 elections. This region is experiencing increasing political tensions and shifting loyalties, and the electoral votes are important and numerous.
Professor Kindiki had tried to intensify his efforts in the region and launched development projects in preparation for the presidential visit. Gachagua appears to be gaining popularity. This is making some nervous, and some political analysts also see it as an attempt to restore Kenya First's popularity in the region.
Rigathi Gachagua waged a vigorous campaign against Ruto in the region and planned to build a broader opposition to undermine the influence of the president and Kindiki.
There are also some good moments in an election campaign. President William Ruto actually asked his security guards to step aside to make way for the crowd.
But it wasn't entirely without brutality; one officer was observed slapping some of the residents.
There are others out to win votes. Kimani Ichung'wah, a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and serving as the Majority Leader in the National Assembly of Kenya's 13th Parliament, is booed by an angry crowd during William Ruto's visit to Mount Kenya. Ruto launched important development projects, including the "Last Mile" electrification program and an affordable housing project in Ol Kalou town in Nyandarua County.
Nyandarua's Women's Affairs Officer, Faith Gitau, is also a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). She was re-elected as Nyandarua County's Women's Representative on a UDA ticket and has been active in that party since August 2022. She faced a similar situation when she attempted to speak. The crowd booed her speech, causing chaos.
Gitau, however, remained calm and ignored the noise. She assured the President that such a situation was nothing new to the residents of the area.
"Mr. President, don't worry, our people are always like this," she said.
Gitau thanked Ruto for his commitment to various development projects, including the construction of a hospital and a sports stadium.
There is another person who is not mincing words, saying that Ruto is unfit to be president and claiming he is corrupt: "He is a dangerous person," said Justin Muturi.
In a devastating interview, the former minister and former Speaker of the National Assembly launched a devastating attack on President Ruto.
Muturi is no stranger to history. From 2013 to 2022, he served as the seventh Speaker of the Kenyan National Assembly and the first Speaker of the bicameral parliament restored under the 2010 Constitution. Muturi also served as Attorney General from October 2022 to July 2024 and is currently Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Human Resources Development under President William Ruto. He has served in various political capacities, including as a member of parliament and in leadership positions within political parties.
Muturi is a tough tactic, claiming Ruto has two distinct personalities, labeling him a "dangerous person," and questioning the head of state's integrity.
"I have come to this conclusion with sadness. I bear no grudges. For me, it is my personal assessment," he added.
