Strange Kisii disease to contaminated water
A few days ago, a strange disease emerged in Kisii, Kisii (also known as Gusii) refers to an ethnic group in Kenya that lives mainly in the Kisii region (officially known as Kisii County) in the south-west of the country. The Kisii are a Bantu-speaking community and are known for their rich culture, agriculture and craft skills, causing 10 deaths in the first few days. For several days, medical professionals were puzzled as to what this disease was and how it could be treated. Now, Mary Muthoni, Permanent Secretary for Public Health, revealed that the "strange" Kisii disease is linked to contaminated water. In an update, Muthoni said tests conducted had confirmed the presence of faeces in a community well. "Tests have confirmed the presence of faeces in a community well that has contaminated the water, making it the likely source of the outbreak. Samples from those affected also show the presence of the faeces," she said. The Permanent Secretary urged the community not to use the said water source and instead use an alternative source. She added that samples were still in the laboratory and an investigation was ongoing. "However, initial investigations already show us that this water is not fit for human consumption. I would like to appeal to every member of this community to please maintain high levels of hygiene," she said. The disease has affected over 200 residents in three villages, including Nyabigege, Nyamarondo and Nyarigiro.
