Sudan recalls its ambassador from Kenya, criticizes RSF presence in Nairobi
Sudan has recalled its ambassador from Kenya, protesting Nairobi's decision to allow RSF fighters to draft a political agreement to form an alternative government.
Tensions between Kenya and Sudan continue to simmer, especially after RSF fighters announced their presence in the capital Nairobi.
Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are a paramilitary group that emerged from the Janjaweed militias known for their involvement in the Darfur conflict. The RSF was officially formed in 2013 and is led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti. The group has been involved in serious human rights abuses, including crimes against humanity and allegations of genocide. The US has imposed sanctions on the RSF and its leaders for human rights abuses.
Sudan's military government has recalled its ambassador to Kenya, complaining about Nairobi's decision to allow RSF fighters and allied groups to forge a political agreement aimed at establishing an alternative government in areas controlled by the group.
Sudan accused Kenya of being involved in a "conspiracy to create an alternative government" and sharply criticized President William Ruto.
The Sudanese News Agency said the Sudanese Foreign Ministry had summoned Ambassador Kamal Jabbara for consultations to lodge a complaint about Kenya's decision to host the militants.
The Kenyan government - as always, at a loss for excuses - reacted defensively, saying it had merely provided a basic platform for dialogue, following its long tradition of supporting dialogue and peace negotiations in the East African political context.
It is not quite as simple as Kenya makes it out to be, with Sudan adding to its allegations that Kenya has provided logistical and resource support to RSF, giving them the opportunity to sign an agreement that they say will divide the country.
Crucially, Sudan also claims that Kenya is part of a "conspiracy to create an alternative government" and strongly criticised President William Ruto for putting his personal and business interests ahead of RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, rather than considering Sudan's historical relationship with Kenya, which includes a long-standing collaboration.
