Message from Greenpeace Africa

Hi Karl, Something historic is happening. On March 31st, I will go to the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, Africa's highest court, to argue something that has never been argued before: that the climate crisis is not just an environmental emergency. It is a systematic violation of the rights of African people. As we take this fight to the courtroom, we go as witnesses to what climate inaction has already cost this continent and its people. We need you with us. Will you quickly add your voice, show your support and help us make history? YES, I WILL ADD MY NAME Here's something that might surprise you. African law, under the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, already explicitly guarantees every person the right to a satisfactory environment. That promise has been broken, repeatedly and systematically because no legal framework has ever held polluters to account. We are asking this Court to define, in law, what African states must do to protect their people in the face of a climate emergency and who must be held accountable when they fail. If the Court agrees with our submission, this will become a tool for every citizen, every activist, every farmer, and every coastal community in Africa to hold their leaders and polluters accountable in ways that have never before been legally possible. Courts respond to public support. Your signature is a signal that people are paying attention, and that they expect justice. Will you quickly add your name and call for the justice this continent is owed? YES, I WILL By 2050, climate change could internally displace up to 105 million Africans. We can't sit back and let this happen. We are not waiting for political goodwill. We are going to court. And we need you with us before March 31st. Thank you for everything you do. Eugene Perumal Governance Coordinator and Legal Greenpeace Africa
