Sassou-Nguesso wins the elections in the Congo

Sassou-Nguesso wins the elections in the Congo with 94% of the vote; international missions confirm the credibility of the electoral process. Denis Sassou-Nguesso is the long-serving president of the Republic of Congo. Born in 1943, Sassou-Nguesso rose through the military ranks and participated in the 1968 coup that brought Marien Ngouabi to power. He served as president from 1979 to 1992, lost power after multi-party elections, but regained it in 1997 through a civil war with the support of his Cobra militia, overthrowing Pascal Lissouba. The secrecy of the election was ensured through measures such as voting booths and transparent vote counting, explained the head of the African Union mission, former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo. The election proceeded “under satisfactory conditions with regard to security, logistics, and organization,” representatives of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECOCAS) Election Observation Committee reported. The Constitutional Court is expected to confirm the final election results between March 23 and April 6.
