Fire in School

Last week, there was a tragedy in Kenya. A fire broke out in a school during the night, killing at least 17 children and devastating the school. The fire broke out around midnight and engulfed the area where the children were sleeping. The school has 800 children aged between five and twelve. This fire leaves many questions unanswered. Karua said three important questions needed to be answered on the first day of the incident. Martha Karua, leader of the Narc Kenya Party, said many questions about the fire tragedy remain unanswered. How many students were in the dormitory? Where was the teacher on duty at the time of the fire? Where was the personnel on duty? Were the students locked in to prevent them from escaping after the disaster? What are the Ministry's policies on student safety and have they been followed?  These simple questions should have been answered on day one and there should have been consequences unless there was some cover-up.  On Wednesday, September 11, the Criminal Investigation Department released a status report on the investigation into the fire incident. It was disclosed that 156 students were housed in the hostel at the time of the fire which killed 21 students. Reacting to the Criminal Investigation Department's statement, Karua questioned the Ministry of Education's policies on student safety since so many students were housed in the hostel.
